You’re eleven and a half hours ahead of Delhi, or thirteen behind California, and your mother just mentioned – almost in passing, on a Sunday call – that she skipped her blood pressure medication for two days because she ‘forgot where she kept it.’ You hang up and sit with that sentence longer than you’d like to admit. This is usually where the search for senior living in India actually begins: not as a plan, but as a small, specifi c worry that won’t leave you alone.
If you’re reading this from outside India, you’re probably not choosing between senior living and ‘nothing.’ You’re choosing between senior living and a patchwork of things that mostly depend on other people remembering to do them – a domestic helper who might leave without notice, a neighbour who checks in when they can, a relative who lives forty minutes away and has their own life. Senior living isn’t a downgrade from that patchwork. For most NRI families, it’s the fi rst time the arrangement doesn’t depend on luck.
Brochures look similar across providers: green campus, activities, meals, medical support. The diff erences that matter are underneath that language, and they’re the same questions a local family would ask, just harder to verify from a distance.
At Vardaan Senior Living in West Delhi, for example, the medical piece isn’t a referral arrangement – there’s an in-house hospital staff ed by 28 practitioners, with nursing care, physiotherapy, and ambulance access built into daily operations, not called in as an emergency add-on. The community is ISO 9001:2015 certifi ed and a member of ASLI, and sits close enough to Mundka Metro Station and Indira Gandhi International Airport that a weekend visit doesn’t eat up half your leave. None of that is unique to Vardaan – it’s the baseline this guide is asking you to check for wherever you’re looking.
One thing this checklist can’t do: have the actual conversation with your parent for you. That one usually goes better when it’s framed around what they gain – company, structure, a doctor down the hall – rather than what the family can no longer manage. We’ve written a separate piece on reframing that conversation if it’s the part you’re dreading most.
If you’re early in this process, start with our remote due-diligence checklist for vetting a community without visiting in person, and the documentation checklist for what to have ready once you’ve decided. If you’d rather just talk it through, reach out to our team – most NRI families start with a video call before anything else.
The biggest diff erence is verifi cation. A local family can visit unannounced; an NRI family has to rely on video tours, documentation, certifi cations, and other families’ reviews to judge quality from a distance.
ISO 9001:2015 certifi cation and membership in the Association of Senior Living India (ASLI) are two credible signals that an operator follows documented quality and safety standards.
Many NRI families do the initial shortlisting and video tours remotely, then make one visit before fi nalizing – often timed around an existing trip home.
purely on amenities and photos rather than medical infrastructure, staffi ng levels, and how billing actually works – the details that matter once a parent has moved in.
